Remember the 70’s? Remember when bands from places like Muscle Shoals, Jacksonville, and Spartanburg were making music that sounded like rock ‘n’ roll wearing a cowboy hat? British bands like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin had recently taken to ‘borrowing’ American Blues, bringing it across the ocean, wringing out its most marketable morsels, adding a hint of European flare and showmanship, and returning it packaged neatly for the insatiable American entertainment appetite. Meanwhile, south of the Mason-Dixon Line, something American was happening. The southern man was singing the blues again, this time with a slow drawl and the occasional steel guitar. It was hard-driving rock ‘n’ roll with your good timin’ buddies gathered on the front porch catching fireflies. The South was taking blues to the country all over again. It was whiskey-drinking music.
This is the torch Copper & Glass aims to help re-ignite. Over the last decade or so, American concert-goers and music buyers had developed some of the same habits that led to the so-called British invasion in the sixties and its long-lasting holdover effects, buying Europeanized rock ‘n’ roll by the bus load. But the European bus has hit a pot hole, with bands like Kings of Leon, My Morning Jacket, Drive-by Truckers, Alabama Shakes, and Blackberry Smoke finding ever-growing audiences with largely grass-roots followings. Rooted deeply in Blues and Southern Rock and drawing from a long list of American songwriting influences, Copper & Glass (along with a growing list of artists) stands poised to renew the purely American musical experience. The band’s unmistakable sound hearkens back to straight-ahead rock ‘n’ rollers like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers; melody-heavy American hit-makers like Jackson Browne, and modern Americana/Roots icons like Ryan Adams and Ray LaMontagne.
Named the 2012 Tioga-Sequoia Band of the Year, Copper & Glass is currently booking throughout the West Coast. Members have performed at notable Los Angeles area venues such as the legendary Whisky-a-Go-Go, a host of established venues in the San Francisco Bay Area, and countless stops across the West Coast and beyond. C&G has shared billing with highly established acts such as widely popular Militia Group recording artists “Lakes,” Park the Van artists “He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister,” San Francisco southern rockers, “Sioux City Kid,” and the Central Valley’s own “Poor Mans Poison,” recent $100,000 winners of the esteemed Texaco Country Showdown in Nashville. The band’s first full-length album has received high praise in well-read publications in the U.S. and Europe. A new full-length work is currently in production and set for a 2014 release.
